Caries is the most common disease in the oral cavity, which can affect anyone, regardless of age. Its development is a long process that begins without pain and visible symptoms.

Over time, it destroys the hard tissues of the tooth, mainly as a result of the action of bacteria. The reasons for its appearance are different – from improper oral hygiene and lifestyle to health conditions and genetic predisposition.

How does tooth decay develop?

Dental caries is an infectious process that depends on the constantly changing environment in the oral cavity. Its development can be affected by the presence of plaque. This is a sticky film that covers the teeth and is left on them by certain foods when they are not cleaned properly.

If it is not removed, the bacteria in the plaque quickly begin to remove the minerals from the hard outer layer, the enamel. Initially, small white or yellowish spots are formed on the surface without disturbing its integrity.

In this first and early stage, caries develops “imperceptibly” – there are no symptoms and can only be detected by a good dentist. If not detected in time, it can cause serious problems.

If measures are not taken at the initial stage, caries continues to progress:

  • Second stage – the enamel areas begin to be affected more seriously. Usually there is no pain yet, but a black or chalky spot forms on the surface of the tooth.
  • Third stage – the enamel wears away, bacteria and acid reach the dentin – the softer layer that is more susceptible to damage. This is where the first symptoms appear – sensitivity to cold and hot drinks, sweet foods and others. However, as it progresses, the pain may still be minimal or occur over different periods of time with variable intensity.
  • Fourth stage – reaches the pulp of the tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels are located. It may swell or pinch the nerve, causing sharp pain. Sometimes the damage can cause an infection that reaches the root, bone or adjacent teeth.
  • Fifth stage – the pulp begins to necrose and destroy irreparably. There is a risk of an abscess or spread of the bacteria.

Treatment of a tooth affected by deep decay often involves root canal treatment or, in the most severe case, extraction of the tooth. Therefore, it is essential to prevent the development of caries through timely measures and proper oral hygiene.
