Interesting facts

Extracting sage, retinized sage

Retined sages are those that cannot fully emerge. The reason for this can be a physical barrier, when the direction of the tooth is such that it prevents it from erupting, or the size of the jaw is too small, which usually causes severe discomfort, infections, caries and damage to adjacent teeth and cysts. Sometimes even properly positioned wisdom teeth cause complications when they break, such as pain, swelling, fever, swollen lymph nodes.

Screening for their presence begins at the end of adolescence around the age of 18. This often includes a clinical examination by a dentist, as well as radiography and/or CVST.
Retained wisdom teeth that have no pathology and have not caused resorption of the anterior tooth rarely cause symptoms.

In fact, only 12% of retained wisdom teeth are associated with pathology.
Infection resulting from a wisdom tooth eruption can be initially treated with antibiotics or surgical removal of the gum above the tooth when there are no other obstructions to the eruption. Extraction is required in cases of incorrect placement of the wisdom tooth. Additional information can be found here.

Removal of a retained wisdom tooth at “Dental Center Dr. Boneva” can be both planned and emergency surgery. Before proceeding with an operative wisdom tooth extraction, a mandatory on-site consultation with Dr. Boneva at the clinic is required. The patient should have a panoramic x-ray, where the position and complexity of the situation are considered, the approximate cost is determined in relation to the expected difficulty, and a date is scheduled.

Let me answer the most frequently asked questions in my practice:

1) Does it hurt during the operation?
During the surgical removal of a retinal tooth, no pain is felt, as the manipulation is performed under anesthesia. What patients feel is the touch and pressure in the area of the tooth being extracted. Vibrations may also be felt in teeth where a handpiece is used.

2) Can it still hurt during the operation?
In patients who have allowed their wisdom teeth to become inflamed and have active inflammation and swelling in the area due to the presence of pus around the tooth, the effect of the anesthetic may not be complete and pain may be felt during extraction. In such patients, we avoid performing operations at this time, and first treat the inflammation, and only after the tissues around the tooth have healed do we proceed to the operation.

3) How long will it take to remove an impacted wisdom tooth?
It usually takes about 30-40 min.

4) How long after this will I feel the wound?
The recovery period is individual. It depends on many factors such as hygiene, smoking, general illnesses and medications. It usually takes one to two weeks for the symptoms to completely subside.

5) Will I have any restrictions while the wound heals?
Apart from the restriction to avoid smoking and strict oral hygiene, nothing special is usually required.

Sincerely,
Dr. Boneva
